Hey! If you have a hireling, the XP gain is is always lower. It also depends on the level difference between your main and your hireling. The greater the level difference the lesser XP your hireling/main (the one with lower level) get.

but the new update is good… whenever you have a hireling… the system will give you free plus 100% exp
