If you have access to these two items you have a very good foundation for a Chainsaw chakram build.
The main disadvantage to whirling blades is the long cool down. Mirror cast keeps the damage going until the next cast and gives more area coverage for damage.
You can build it any way you like with multiple different options but if requested I could give an example of a ‘basic’ build effective up to floor 1000.
I used Jester pet with Trickster to summon an extra mirror image but it is unnecessary. With mirror cast it gives enough coverage to eliminate everything around.
I’ve done Chakram with Periphery Set and Elemental Set with one build and Mirrorcast and Elemental Set with another. using Specialist affix will also give a chance for another free cast of WhirlingBlades.
+60% Cooldown will give Whirling Blades a 2 second cool down.
Interestingly I have never tried with cool down reduction. Can Whirling Blades be re-cast before the original cast has returned fully? Does it take longer to return than the cool down reduction makes the skill available to use again? @golem
WhirlingBlades has a 5 second cool down. it takes 2.5 seconds to spin away and 2.5 seconds to spin back. with +60% Cooldown it takes 1 second to spin away and 1 second to spin back, a 2 second cool down. if the cool down gets faster than 2 seconds, it affects the Shakrams coverage, leaving gaps that keeps an enemy from being hit. there a some old posts about this.
Cast Chakram, 25% Specialist for another with a 1 second delay, 25% Mirrorcast for another with a 1 second delay, Elemental Set (5) is a 37.5% chance for another with a 1 second delay.
the downside is Specialist and Mirrorcast can’t be rolled with Ruby, and Elemental Set can’t be rolled with Amethyst. on the upside, if you have all of these and Periphery Set, Periphery has a chance to activate from any of these when they return.
with Illusions, you get a WhirlingBlade for each Illusion that do OH DMG. I haven’t done any tests to see if Periphery Set works with WhirlingBlades returning from Illusion.
