before I did my tests, I thought Crit DMG stacked on Poison, Fire, & Bleed DoT’s. I also thought Weaken only affected DMG from the original attack, and then I was wondering if it stacked like Crit DMG or not. Time To Test!
first example will be a 1000 DMG Poison Weapon on a Poison Map with +350% Crit DMG (60% Crit Chance), +120% Weaken (100% chance for Weaken), and some Toxic. Poison Maps reduce Poison DMG by -50%.
Primary Attack:
(1 x 0.5) + 1.2 = 1.7 Weaken Multiplier
1000 x 0.5 = 500 Poison DMG
1000 x 1.7 = 1700 (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
1700 x 5 = 8500 (Crit DMGk, 60% chance)
Poison DoT (1): DMG based on Primary Attack before Weaken & Crit DMG calculations. 80% of Primary Attack DMG spread over 8 seconds.
1 + 1.2 = 2.2 Weaken Multiplier
500 x 0.1 = 50 Poison DoT
50 x 2.2 = 110 Poison DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
110 x 5 = 550 Poison DoT (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
Toxic DoT - Original Target: DMG based on base Poison DoT before Weaken & Crit DMG calculations. does x4 Poison DoT DMG a second for 5 seconds. affected by -50% Poison Resist. a target can be affected by multiple Toxic Clouds.
(1 x 4 x 0.5) + 1.2 = 3.2 Weaken Multiplier
50 x 2 = 100 Toxic DoT
100 x 3.2 = 320 Toxic DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
320 x 5 = 1600 (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
Poison DoT (2): DMG based on Toxic DoT DMG before Weaken & Crit DMG calculations. 80% of Toxic DoT DMG spread over 8 seconds.
1 + 1.2 = 2.2 Weaken Multiplier
100 x 0.1 = 10 Poison DoT
10 x 2.2 = 22 Poison DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
22 x 5 = 110 Poison DoT (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
only the highest DMG Poison DoT can be on a target. this Primary Target would take Poison DoT (1) DMG and ignore the Poison DoT (2) DMG. also take into consideration that Primary Attacks have a random +/- 25% DMG multiplier, so enemies hit by a Poison AoE attack might have different values for Primary Attack DMG.
using Plagued Set increases the DMG of Poison DoT (1), (2), and (3). with +200% Blight or higher, the Poison DoT (2) DMG will be higher than Poison DoT (1) DMG, with or without Plagued Set.
using Poison on Fire & Ice Maps, just take the 0.5 out of the DMG equations.
using Ignore Resist would cause Poison DMG to do Fire & Ice DMG on all Maps. doesn’t work with Effective Mythic or Weaken affix.
monsters with Greatly Resist Poison affix is a 0.25 multiplier in the same part of the equation as the 0.5 multiplier for Poison Resist. with the above Target:
(1 x 0.5 x 0.25) + 1.2 = 1.325 Weaken Multiplier
as you can see, a Poison Element Weapon on a Poison Map will do badly without Weaken and low Crit Chance/DMG. and it gets worse for an Enemy Ally damaged by the Primary Targets Toxic Cloud.
Enemy Ally: has 50% Poison Resist against the Original Targets Toxic DoT DMG.
(1 x 0.5) + 1.2 = 1.7 Weaken Multiplier
100 x 0.5 = 50 Toxic DoT
50 x 1.7 = 85 Toxic DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
85 x 5 = 425 Toxic DoT (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
Poison DoT (3): DMG based on Toxic DoT DMG before Weaken & Crit DMG calculations. 80% of Toxic DoT DMG spread over 8 seconds.
1 + 1.2 = 2.2 Weaken Multiplier
50 x 0.1 = 5 Poison DoT
5 x 2.2 = 11 Poison DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
11 x 5 = 55 Poison DoT (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
having enough Toxic with Plagued Set & Blight will mean lots of Poison DoT DMG and multiple Toxic DoT DMG against mobs and on Pack Size affix Maps. Crit DMG helps with more DPS, and on higher Maps, using Explosive and/or Crushing Blow affixes brings even more DPS to enemies.
Effective DMG - this was kind of hard to test, so I could be wrong. but from what I could see with my tests, only the Primary, or First, Attack is affected by Effective DMG. my calculations for Toxic included Effective DMG, but when testing, I was getting some DMG lower than what I calculated. for those wondering if you should use Effective Mythic or Poison on Shock Maps, this is what the calculation would look like. I’ll also use +200% Blight so you can see how Poison DoT (2) is higher than Poison DoT (1).
Primary Attack:
(1 x 1.25) + 1.2 = 2.45 Weaken Multiplier
1000 x 1.25 = 1250 Poison DMG
1000 x 2.45 = 2450 Poison (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
2450 x 5 = 12,250 Poison (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
Poison DoT (1):
1 + 1.2 = 2.2 Weaken Multiplier
1250 x 0.1 = 125 Poison DoT
125 x 2.2 = 275 Poison DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
275 x 5 = 1375 Poison DoT (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
Toxic DoT - Original Target:
1 + 1.2 = 2.2 Weaken Multiplier
4 x 3 = 12 Blight Multiplier
125 x 12 = 1500 Toxic DoT DMG
1500 x 2.2 = 3300 Toxic DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
3300 x 5 = 16,500 Toxic DoT (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
Poison DoT (2):
1 + 1.2 = 2.2 Weaken Multiplier
1500 x 0.1 = 150 Poison DoT DMG
150 x 2.2 = 330 Poison DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
330 x 5 = 1650 Poison DoT (Crt DMG, 60% chance)
Enemy Ally: Takes the Original Targets Toxic DoT DMG.
1 + 1.2 = 2.2 Weaken Multiplier
1500 Toxic DoT DMG
1500 x 2.2 = 3300 Toxic DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
3300 x 5 = 16,500 Toxic DoT (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
Poison DoT (3):
1 + 1.2 = 2.2 Weaken Multiplier
1500 x 0.1 = 150 Poison DoT
150 x 2.2 = 330 Poison DoT (Weaken DMG, 100% chance)
330 x 5 = 1650 Poison DoT (Crit DMG, 60% chance)
looking at the math, Poison, Fire, & Bleed Builds will do best with Weaken, and even better with Effective Mythic.
there can only be one of each Poison, Fire, and Bleed DoTs on any enemy (they stack additively). only the highest DMG of each DoT will be causing DMG on an enemy, all lower DMG DoT’s are ignored.
Arcane Orbit: Orbit DMG is also calculated before Weaken & Crit DMG. one thing it does that Poison & Fire DoT can’t is that it can cause Bleed DMG if you have Bleed Chance on your Build. an Arcane Orbit Build will also do lots of DMG with Weaken, Crit DMG, and +100% Celestial or better. with +50% Bleed DMG or better, you can get some high Bleed DMG, comparable to a Fire & Blistering Bleed Build.
one thing to remember, Fire, Poison, and Bleed DoT’s tic every second for each of their durations. a Skill with high Attacks Per Second or low Cooldown with high Attack Frequency could do as much or more DPS than the DoT’s DMG per second, unless you put a lot of investment into getting high DoT DMG.
