I can’t seem to get my characters above level 99. What am I missing?

level 99 is the maximum level for Characters, so you are not missing anything. Items & Pets have a maximum level of 100.

Ascending doesn’t affect maximum Character level. what it does is, if you choose a Perk, your Character goes back to level 1 and the experience you need to reach level 99 again is increased. you also get a different Character Portrait Frame Color.
